Elk Grove Township serves area youth

These needs include health care, opportunities for social growth and social development, community connections and involvement, and family support. While all of the township’s social service departments are involved in the various programs that serve our youth, the Township Youth Services Department plays the primary role. Led by the Youth Services Director Renee Dorn, the department offers valuable individual and group programs, both at the township and in local schools. The Youth Services team works closely with School Districts 59 and 57 to provide in-classroom programs that address, among other issues, female empowerment, bully prevention and social skill development. The demand for these programs has grown significantly since students returned to school after the COVID-19 shutdown. These programs are also offered on-site at the township and often make use of the Challenge Course located on the property — a low ropes course that propels young participants through physical and mental activities that help to develop communication skills, problem solving and reinforce the value of teamwork and trust. A new school program is the Student Hygiene Closet, which provides personal products to middle school students who may not have access to them. The team also assists High School District 214 by participating in the district’s “Life Program” that helps students with disabilities successfully transition into life beyond high school. In addition, the team works with Elk Grove High School to host Student Government Days where the students are introduced to the workings of local government and encouraged to be involved in their communities. “I believe our Youth Services programs are of great value. Our partnerships with local schools and the programs we hold on-site at the township are all focused on helping our youth navigate life’s challenges and gain the skills needed to successfully make the transition into adulthood,” said Elk Grove Township Supervisor George Busse. Supervisor Busse also pointed out that a unique township youth program that has been on hold for a couple years is coming back later this fall. “Our Bike Safety Course will be up and running for the fall school semester,” he said. “The township has offered bike safety courses to local schools for more than 50 years, but we had to put things on pause for a while after we moved to our new offices three years ago to reconstruct it.” Many residents who grew up in Elk Grove Township participated in this program, and there have been consistent inquiries as to when it would start again. In anticipation of its reopening, the township is currently accepting donations of new or gently used bikes for children K-5. Bikes can be dropped off at the township offices, 600 Landmeier Road, in Elk Grove Village, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays. Information about township youth programs can be found at elkgrovetownship.com/youth-services.

Elk Grove Township Offers Two Flu Vaccine Clinics this Fall

The clinics are free to attend and open to all Township residents ages 18 and up. While reservations are not required, those who wish to secure their spot can make a reservation by calling 847-437-0300. Walk-ins are also welcome, and photo identification is required to participate in the clinic. “The health and wellness of our community members is very important to the Township, and this is why we have partnered with Ascension to offer the flu vaccine for our residents,” said Elk Grove Township Supervisor George Busse. “The timing is just right with the imminent arrival of flu season.” Seniors 55 years of age and older, or those who are disabled and 18+ are invited to utilize the Township Senior Bus for transportation to and from either of the clinics. The Township encourages those requesting a ride to make their reservations now so the transportation staff can ensure their needs are accommodated.  According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), flu vaccinations reduce the risk of getting the flu by between 40% and 60% and can also decrease the severity of the flu if someone gets it. It is also believed to be an important tool to protect the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. To learn more about research from the CDC, visit https://www.cdc.gov/flu/vaccines-work/vaccineeffect.htm.  For additional information on the upcoming clinics, or to make a reservation for transportation, please call 847-437-0300.

Looking Ahead: Elk Grove Township Launches Holiday Outreach Programs

“Needs in our community have dramatically increased, which is why we are seeking donors for our holiday giving programs earlier this year than in previous years,” said Elk Grove Township Supervisor George Busse. “We are hoping to be able to help all of our residents in need, but we will need some support from our community to reach this goal.” Monetary donors are currently being sought for the Thanksgiving Donation Drive, $50 gift card donations are requested to support the Holiday Gift program, and individuals are being sought to help to fulfill the holiday gift wish lists for older adults through the Angel Tree program.   Thanksgiving Donation Drive: Usage of the Elk Grove Food Pantry has increased by approximately 150% over the last four years, and the Township wants to ensure every resident who utilizes the food pantry can also receive a complete Thanksgiving meal this holiday season. To this end, the Township is hosting a virtual donation drive with the goal to reach $12,000 by early November. Donations can be made by calling 847-437-0300, visiting our website www.elkgrovetownship.com, or dropping them off at the Township offices, 600 Landmeier Road in Elk Grove Village. Individuals can follow the Township’s fundraising progress on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/elkgrovetownship.   Holiday Gift Drive: Parents experiencing financial challenges oftentimes cannot afford to give gifts to their children over the holidays. Residents can sponsor a child and help to fulfill their holiday wish list by providing a $50 gift card for a local retailer. Gift cards serve multiple purposes; they give parents the opportunity to experience the joy of giving despite their hardships, support local commerce through the purchase of gift cards at local retailers, and fulfill children’s wish lists from Santa. Consider purchasing a gift card to benefit children over the holidays. To register as a donor please visit the Township, register on our website, or call the Social Services Department at 224-222-0944. Once registered you will receive detailed instructions of delivering gift cards.  Older Adult Angel Tree:  We know that the holidays can be a difficult time for older adults, especially those who are living alone or who have limited financial resources. By purchasing a gift from the Older Adult Angel Tree, you can help to make sure that these individuals have a happy and memorable holiday season. The Township will display an “Angel Tree” on the west side of the Township office building starting November 1. Senior residents who have been screened by the Social Services Department will be invited to place a gift request, not to exceed $50, on a tree ornament which will then be used to decorate the Angel Tree. Community residents will be invited to choose an ornament with its gift request after November 1, Monday – Friday, between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. We ask that gifts are returned to the Township by December 8th so they can be disbursed to the resident in need.  Elk Grove Township thanks the community for their continued support in making these holiday programs successful.  Your donations help to ensure that no one in our community goes without a festive meal or a gift this holiday season. For more information on all the services provided by the Township, please visit elkgrovetownship.com or contact Director of Social Services and Community Outreach, Corey Dewey, at 224-222-0944.

David Perns and Brian Maye

Elk Grove Township Welcomes New Board Members

Elk Grove Township officially welcomed a new trustee to their Board at the April 17 Board meeting. The Board approved Supervisor George Busse’s appointment of local small business owner, David Perns, to fill a vacancy created by the election of Trustee Vince Dante to the Mount Prospect Village Board. Perns term will run until May of 2025. Perns is the second appointment Supervisor Busse has made to the Board due to vacancies in the last six months. Brian Maye, an attorney, was appointed in December to replace former Trustee Greg Wojtecki, who stepped down for personal reasons. Perns was sworn in at the Township Board meeting shortly after Dante officially submitted his resignation. Supervisor Busse thanked Dante for the energy and inventive thinking that he brought to the Board. He noted that Dante played an invaluable leadership role during a period of major reorganization and program expansion. He specifically highlighted the addition of significant new services in the areas of mental health, senior assistance, and veteran benefits. Furthermore, all this was accomplished without raising taxes.  The two new Board members are business professionals with a history of community involvement. Perns holds a Doctorate in Chiropractic Medicine and owns Perns Back & Neck Clinic and Laser Pain Center in Arlington Heights. He is a member of the Elk Grove Township Agency Committee, which allocates grants for mental health and social service agencies that serve Township residents. He additionally has volunteered for the last two years for District 214’s internship program that assists high school students in determining their future careers.  Maye, who joined the Board at the end of last year, is a partner at the law firm Adler Murphy and McQuillen in Chicago, and formerly served as a criminal trial lawyer for the U.S. Navy JAGC. He additionally served in the Peace Corps, as a Board Member for School District 57, and sat on the Board of Governors for the Northwest Suburban Special Education Organization. Supervisor Busse stated that while he was disappointed to see the former trustees leave the Board, he’s excited to have Perns and Maye as their replacements “Both of these individuals are excellent additions to our Board. They are well-respected professionals who have shown through their active community involvement and volunteerism they are dedicated to serving the Township and its residents.” Busse noted that Perns and Maye have joined the Board at a time when Township services are increasingly needed. “We are seeing a dramatic escalation in demand for our social, youth, senior, and counseling services. The demand for assistance provided by our Assessor’s office for appealing property taxes also continues to increase dramatically.” “Perns and Maye will be key players in our continual effort to identify where additional needs exist, and then the work it will take to address them in a fiscally responsible way,” Busse said.

Passport Services Available Through Elk Grove Township

While the Township can assist with passport renewals for minors, they cannot assist with the renewal of adult passports. Adult passports that expired within the last five years must be renewed by mail, or on a limited basis, online. Adult passports that expired more than five years ago require a new passport application and as previously noted, the Township can assist with new passports. Those who would like to apply for a new or replacement passport must provide proof of citizenship (birth certificate or naturalization certificate), a photo ID (driver’s license or state ID card), and a passport photo taken within the last six months. The Township does not provide a passport photo service, but photos can be obtained from most businesses that have a photo department. The fee for passports is $130 for adults and $100 for minors. This fee can only be paid with a check or money order. There is also a $35 facility fee that can be paid with a credit card, cash or check. “We have experienced passport agents that can answer all of your questions and make the application process quick and easy for you,” said Assistant Township Administrator Izabela Manzo. “Our agents will let you know what is needed to apply, review your documentation and assist you in properly submitting your application.” The standard time for the U.S Department of State to process passports is currently 10-13 weeks and does not include shipping time. The Township suggests that those who apply allow up to two weeks for shipping. Expedited services for passport processing, as well as for expedited shipping, are available for additional costs. Residents can call the Township at 847-437-0300 for additional information or to schedule an appointment.

Elk Grove Township Connects with Partners to Serve the Community

EGTAC was established in 2016, meets twice per year, and includes nearly 40 organizations. Member groups serve a wide variety of individuals and families in need of help. Examples of needs they address are homelessness, mental health, drug abuse, domestic violence and senior-disabled transportation. These needs are expanding as the northwest suburbs continue to grow in terms of population and diversity. Elk Grove Township includes nearly 100,000 residents that live in portions of Elk Grove Village, Mount Prospect, Arlington Heights, Des Plaines and Rolling Meadows. The most recent EGTAC meeting was held in late February in the Elk Grove Township Town Hall, and member, Partners for Our Communities, presented to the group. The organization works with other agencies and nonprofits to help underserved people become more self-sufficient, with a goal to help them become community leaders. The presentation focused on the issues surrounding immigration and the resources needed to address the associated challenges. Those who attended also had the opportunity to network and share information about their specific services, so that if a need arises, they know to whom a referral should be made. “Through EGTAC, we are able to get all of these different entities into one room and have real conversations that help us to stay up to date on each group’s core competencies,” said Corey Dewey, Elk Grove Township’s Director of Social Services and Community Outreach. “Through this collaborative effort, we can explore partnerships and provide vital referrals for residents facing different needs and challenges, in a more holistic way.” A recent example Dewey cited was when a young boy attending a District 59 school continued to come to school without completing his homework. The school social worker learned the reason why was that the family didn’t have electricity due to unpaid bills, and had been experiencing other financial challenges after the father lost his job. The school district referred the family to the Township to not only provide funding sources for electricity restoration, but also to connect the father with the Township employment specialist to find work. The Township then referred the family to a local church that had a clothing closet to help them provide clothing for their children. Dewey added that she believes EGTAC’s existence is vital to the effective use of available social service funds and to the ability of organizations like Elk Grove Township to provide immediate, comprehensive assistance to residents working to get back on their feet and become self-sufficient. For more information about EGTAC and how you can get involved, please contact the Elk Grove Township Social Services Department at 224-265-6111.

Elk Grove Township Launches Donation Campaign for Food Pantry

The Food Pantry served an average of 522 families each month throughout 2022, which represented a 38% increase compared to 2021. The number of residents who use this valuable service has continued to show an increase through the early part of this year, with an average of 648 families served in January of 2023, indicating a 66% increase compared to January of 2022. “Services provided through the Food Pantry are vital for many of our community members who are struggling to keep food on the table. We are implementing creative solutions to help ensure we can provide this assistance to everyone who needs it,” said Elk Grove Township Supervisor George Busse. “Generous individuals, businesses, organizations, churches and other groups are invited to help us reach this goal, as we work to assist those experiencing food insecurity.” Starting in early February, the Food Pantry increased the number of days it is open to four days per week. Appointments are required, and can be made Tuesdays between 9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., and on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. To receive a Food Pantry card, a photo ID and current utility bill are required. Going forward, the Food Pantry will launch a monthly campaign to increase donations for specific needs. Lists of requested items will be published on the Township Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn pages, which can be found by searching @elkgrovetownship. February’s campaign is dedicated to more “family-friendly” items targeted to families with small and school-aged children. Requested items include children’s snacks, baby products, diapers, and other personal hygiene products for children. For individuals or groups who would like to make larger donations, the Township can schedule a pick-up time for convenience. Smaller donations can be dropped off at 600 Landmeier Road, in Elk Grove Village from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., between Monday and Friday. Monetary donations are also welcome and accepted to fill the gap between what is donated and higher demand items. Checks can be made payable to: “Elk Grove Township Food Pantry” and dropped off/mailed to the Township offices, 600 Landmeier Road, Elk Grove Village, Illinois, 60007. Please call 224-265-6111 with any questions and for more information.
