Qualifications:

Individual must possess a high school diploma or equivalent certificate. Minimum of one (1) year experience in food preparation, sanitation, and service. Must be able to cook adequate amounts of nutritious meals and prepare food following the facility’s policies and procedures. Must possess a sanitation certificate.

Specific Requirements:

  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Assume the authority, responsibility and accountability of Cook.
  • Cook menu items in order to establish food service production line, etc., to ensure that meals are prepared on time.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions, follow instructions, and accept constructive criticism.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, healthcare professionals, government agencies, and the general public.
  • Must possess leadership ability and be able to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of the facility.
  • Must be a minimum of eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must maintain the care and use of supplies, tools, equipment, etc.
  • Must be willing to work harmoniously with other personnel, as well as be willing to treat residents with dignity and respect.
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and strategies and be willing to incorporate them into existing principles.
  • Must be able to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis as well as a calm environment throughout the department.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must possess sight and hearing senses so that the requirements of the position can be fully met.
  • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and ability to work effectively with residents and personnel.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • May be required to lift, push, pull, move equipment, supplies, etc. in excess of fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents

Responsibilities:

  • Cook a variety of foods in large quantities, following standard recipes, but also able to make independent decisions where situations arise
  • Must take initiative and use sound judgment in setting up meals and utilizing food products and supplies
  • Understanding the hazards and issues of improper food preparation and handling
  • Must have knowledge of food service equipment and supplies, seasoning, characteristics of general diets and restricted diets, and a willingness to prepare foods in the best interest of the residents of the facility
  • Clean and maintain the equipment used, including but not limited to, pots, pans, utensils, stoves, grills, ovens, etc.
  • Must be able to organize refrigerators, freezers, storage pace, and shelving units so an orderly kitchen can be maintained
  • Must be aware of proper food preparation techniques and temperatures and be sure adequate amounts of nutritious foods are cooked
  • Must be knowledgeable in proper food and equipment sanitation and hygienic methods of food preparation
  • Must be creative and innovative and assist in making suggestions for resident meals, snacks, and substitutions
  • Assist in serving meals to residents and cleaning resident dining rooms after meals
  • Dispose of food and waste in accordance with established policies.
  • Alert Culinary Manager of all necessary repairs or maintenance needed for equipment.
