The program’s first intern gained exposure to all Township departments, and is now attending law school at the University of Illinois.
Elk Grove Township established its first-ever summer internship in May of 2016, and its first intern, Kiran Gill, successfully completed the program in August.
The internship provided the opportunity for Gill to gain experience from a variety of functions within Township government, including Administration, Finance, General Assistance and Transportation.
“Throughout my rotations in the various offices, I was tasked with completing substantial projects. Each helped me to better understand Township government, and the ways in which it serves its residents,” Gill said.
Interns are expected to play a part in the development of programs that benefit residents, as well as attend Township meetings and those of neighboring government bodies.
Elk Grove Township Supervisor Mike Sweeney said it is extremely important for the Township to provide these opportunities for college-aged individuals.
“Our goal is to provide valuable education opportunities and work experience for young adults from the area, who are working to find their future professional focus,” Sweeney said. “We were thrilled to have Kiran join our team; she added great value during her time here to the many programs and services we offer.”
Gill, who graduated from Northern Illinois University (NIU) in the spring of 2016, was one of three students recognized by the NIU president for her achievements. She was named a Lincoln Laureate for the 2015-2016 academic year, which is an annual award given to the top graduating senior based on academics and involvement in extra-curricular activities.
Gill obtained her degree in Political Science and is now attending law school at the University of Illinois in Champaign.
She said she is grateful for the opportunity to gain real-world local government experience that she can utilize in her future professional experiences.
